Life in the Fast Lane

A Girl's Best Friend

By 1:07 PM , , ,

In all honesty, I don't think the saying "Diamonds are a girl's best friend"1 rings true for every single XX-chromosomed individual on the planet.

I think it's shoes.

Seriously now. I've gone to the mall with girl friends and normally, they'd ooh and aah at certain dresses or bags.

But stepping into a shoe store and seeing all the pretty pairs on display? It's like walking into Disneyland for the first time.

At least that's how it is for me. (Especially when I know I have the dough to splurge; otherwise, it feels like torture.)

Last Saturday, I was in a generally good mood — read: semi-loaded and ready to spend — and saw that some shoes in Aldo were on sale. Since my mom was with me and she needed to buy pointy black pumps, I entered the shop with her.

Lo and behold, I saw a pair of shoes2 that screamed, "BUY ME!"

I tried them on, liked how they felt on my feet3, checked the price (higher than what I would normally shell out for a pair, but like I said, I was in the mood), and gave the cashier my blessing.

And now, they are my best friend.

1 Perhaps because I was never dazzled by shiny things. Even as a child, I would stay away from barrettes with tacky gems, or girly fuschia shoes with huge studs. Also, a pair of diamond earrings probably costs more than my savings and my brother's combined. I'd rather buy a MacBook Pro, thanks.

2 Photo again taken with my iPhone. It does the job well when I don't have a camera with me (i.e. my Powershot, which is normally in my bag but is with my sister most of the time nowadays, or my DSLR).

3 I generally buy a size 9 or 10, depending on the shoe. Yes, I have rather huge feet. It's nearly impossible to find decent shoes my size in this country (where the average height for females is 5'3"; I'm 5'8", according to the doctor of our office) so when I see something that fits me/meets my taste preferences, I go for it without thinking twice.
